A Message from Your Executive Director

On behalf of the dedicated staff of the Housing Authority of the City of McAllen, our Board of Commissioners, we welcome you to our Web Page.

The Housing Authority was created in 1939 by the City of McAllen with a mutual promise to eliminate unsafe and insanitary dwellings by promoting the creation of safe, decent and affordable housing. This promise sets our mission “Transforming Families- Strengthening Community” and drives our commitment to meet the housing needs of our community.

Through our monthly service to over 3,500 family members through Public Housing and Tenant Based Section 8 Housing programs we recognize that housing is the beginning step toward transforming families. Our resident services also provide access to social services and educational opportunities.  It is through our partnerships with community stake holders that we are able to provide family self-sufficiency and mobility opportunities.

Our $5 million dollar funding provided annually to subsidize rent payments for hard working families through our Section 8 Program supports the local investment and upkeep of privately owned properties in this program.  The stringent inspection protocols of the Housing and Urban Development (HUD) assure that federal dollars are supporting quality properties and strengthening community investments.

The McAllen Housing Authority’s vision embraces the challenge of the increasing housing needs in our community.  We will meet that challenge with a strong determination to grow and evolve, thus continuing to make a positive impact for our families and community.
